Utes open first spring under head coach Morgan Scalley
SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah football program has entered its first set of spring workouts under head coach Morgan Scalley, with the Utes' returning student-athletes and newcomers taking the field for the first time together. Utah will take the field for 15 spring workouts at the Spence & Cleone Eccles Football Center and Rice-Eccles Stadium.Â

Scalley has liked what he's seen through the first seven workouts of the spring.Â
On the progress through the first half of workouts…
"I'm excited with the progress," Scalley said. "You're seeing the offensive line continue to make strides. IÂ think the offense maybe got a little bit better of the defense in some of the scrimmage work we did on Saturday. It was good to see the defense bounce back. As long as it's back and forth and not one side dominating the other, that's what you're wanting to see is competitive football and the culture continues to be a strong emphasis."
On the installation of the new offense…
"When you're talking alignment, assignment, technique that's the progress," Scalley said. "Align correctly, align with speed, what's my assignment and master technique. Then after that it's reps, reps, reps. Building a skill takes time and effort. We've been getting ready for this through winter workouts and coach (Kevin) McGiven and staff has done a great job."
On the new additions becoming a part of the team…
"Awesome, and it's because the guys in the program are bringing them along," Scalley said. "It's great to have those in the program that are compelling, that don't just focus on themselves. They're on a journey and they're bringing other people with them. It's great to have those types of guys and that's what you are looking for in leadership. It's also recruiting the type of players you know will fit into your culture that you don't have to spend a lot of time grooming and getting them into the right mindset."
