IRVING, Texas – Sophomore
Nolan Dunkel has been named the Big 12 Conference Men's Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Thursday. This marks the second time this season Dunkel has been tabbed Newcomer of the Week.
Dunkel contributed 13 points in the Utes' dual meet against SMU on Saturday thanks to a pair of podium finishes. The Arlington, Va., native won gold in the 100 Fly for the second time this season with a 48.10 and placed second in the 100 Back, touching the wall in 47.28 for his third medal in the event as a Ute. Dunkel also helped the 200 Medley relay team take gold, leading off with a 21.74 split, and clocked a 19.96 split in the 200 Free relay, helping his squad place second.
Dunkel also won Newcomer of the Week honors following Utah's win over Hawaii in December when he took second in the 100 Fly and led off both the 200 Medley and 200 Free relays, both of which won gold.
Utah has earned a total of 10 Big 12 Conference weekly awards this season. Dunkel joins divers Kathryn Grant and
Elias Petersen as Utes who have won multiple conference weekly awards this year. Utah has claimed 20 weekly awards since joining the Big 12 prior to last season.
Utah Swim and Dive is back in the water on Friday when the Utes take on BYU in Provo. Both the men's and women's teams outscored the Cougars when the two sides last saw one another at the Big 12 West Championships last month.
