SALT LAKE CITY—University of Utah Athletics Director Mark Harlan announced today that the department will part ways with men's tennis head coach Roeland Brateanu, who has led the program for the past 12 years. Associate Head Coach Sten van Beurden will serve as interim head coach.
Â
"I want to thank Roeland for his contributions as head coach of our men's tennis program," Harlan said. "We wish him and his family well, and will support Sten and our men's tennis student-athletes as he takes over interim leadership of the program."
Â
Brateanu guided the Utes to four NCAA tournament appearances and earned five ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year awards. Prior to becoming head coach he served seven years as an assistant coach for the Utes. The Utes earned NCAA Tournament invitations in 2018, '19, '22 and '23 under Brateanu's guidance, and were crowned Pac-12 champions in 2023 when he earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors.
Â
In all, Brateanu spent 21 years with Utah's program, including two seasons as a student-athlete, seven as an assistant coach and 12 as head coach.
