Utes Defeat Bearcats 4-0 in First Round of the Big 12 Championships

WACO, Texas – The University of Utah women's tennis team picked up a 4-0 win over Cincinnati in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament Wednesday afternoon.
Utah was led by Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts who picked up a doubles win on court two. The duo also excelled in singles action with each one picking up victories.
The Utes will advance to the second round to take on No. 5 seeded Arizona at 6 p.m. (MT) on Thursday, April 17.
DOUBLES
Utah set the tone early by picking up the doubles win. Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts defeated Morgan Pyrz and Sakurako Watanabe with a 6-3 score on court two. Samantha Horwood and Dylan Lolofie clinched the doubles point for Utah with a 6-3 win over Zeynep Erman and Callie Flanagan on court three.
SINGLES
Utah kept the momentum in singles action. Emma Valletta started things off with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot over Milica Popovski.
Kamper followed that up with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Erman at the No. 1 spot. The Utes had a 3-0 lead with Kaila Barksdale, Hayley Roberts and Sara Akid battling in third sets.
Barksdale and Roberts were racing for the clinch. At the No. 3 spot, Barksdale dropped her first set to Gabrielle Guenther but Barksdale soared ahead with a 6-1 win in the second set. She was locked in at 5-3 in the third at match point when Roberts clinched for the Utes.
Roberts picked up a 6-2 win in the first set but dropped her second set 6-2 to Watanabe. Roberts powered through for a 6-4 victory in the third set to clinch for the match 4-0 for the Utes.
UP NEXT
The Utes will take on No. 5 seed Arizona in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament in Waco, Texas.
