KANSAS CITY – The Utah men's basketball team gets a brand-new start this Tuesday, March 11, when it battles the 14th-seeded UCF Knights in the opening round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship inside T-Mobile Center.
Roxy Bernstein will have the call while former Baylor Bear King McClure serves as the analyst on ESPN+ as the Runnin' Utes compete in their first conference tournament as members of the Big 12 Conference.
SECOND FIRST TIME
This year's iteration of the Phillips Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship will once again be different with the addition of the four corner schools. Here's how the tournament seeds did last year in Utah's side of the bracket.
No. 6: 0-1
No. 11: 3-1
No. 14: 0-1
AGAINST THE ODDS
Dating back to the start of the Big 12 Conference Tournament in 1997, the No. 11-seed has gone 5-16 overall – including the 2024 tournament where Cincinnati advanced to the quarterfinals. The 2025 iteration of the conference championship will include seeds 13-16 for the first time since the inception of the league and conference tournament.
BURNING MEMORY
Having faced each other just two weeks ago, the Utes and Knights will once again battle it out – this time in Kansas City in the final game of day one at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Championship. Utah battled UCF in a back-and-forth melee back in Orlando and saw the Knights hand Utah a gut-wrenching 76-72 loss on a late basket.
Gabe Madsen and
Ezra Ausar led the way for Utah that game, scoring 23 points and 20 points apiece respectively. Madsen went 5-for-9 from 3-point range while and 8-for-12 overall from the field while Ausar was 7-for-10 from the floor while also shooting 6-of-7 at the line to go with 6 boards.
Mike Sharavjamts added 16 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists that game as well.
Despite the game having 9 lead changes and 4 ties, it was Utah's 19 turnovers that led to 20 extra points for UCF that ended up being its demise.
UP NEXT
Should the Runnin' Utes defeat UCF, they'll advance to the second-round where they'll face off against sixth-seeded Kansas on Wednesday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. (MST) / 8:30 p.m. (CST) local on
ESPN2 or
ESPNU. Roxy Bernstein will once again be guiding fans through the action while former UCLA Bruin Sean Farnham will be at his side as the analyst inside T-Mobile Center.
