SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah alpine skier
Johs Braathen Herland has been named the RMISA Co-MVP in men's giant slalom, the conference unveiled on Friday. It is the third MVP award for Utah this season after
Erica Lavén was so named both for women's classic and freestyle.
The award is given to the skier who accumulates the most NCAA qualification points during the regular season. Herland racked up 152 points in giant slalom competitions, tied for Louis Fausa of Colorado for the most in the RMISA.
He has started all 12 races for Utah as a freshman this season, recording 10 finishes in the top-10 and five podiums. Herland's first collegiate victory came in giant slalom during the Montana State Invitational, adding two more GS podiums at the RMISA Championships (silver) and during an RMISA qualifier race hosted by Utah (bronze).
A native of Kongsberg, Norway, Herland's top slalom result was a silver medal at the Utah Invitational. Combined with a fourth-place GS result during the meet, Herland earned RMISA Skier of the Meet for the Utah Invitational.
Herland will make his NCAA Championships debut next week when the Utes travel to New England for the meet. Dartmouth College is hosting, with alpine events being held at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, New Hampshire. Nordic competitions will take place at Oak Hill in Hanover, New Hampshire.
