SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah freshman Nordic skier
Erica Lavén has been named the RMISA MVP for both women's classic and freestyle, it was announced today by the conference. The award is given to the skier who accumulates the most NCAA qualification points during the regular season.
A Utah women's Nordic skier has now won an RMISA MVP in four of the last five seasons, with
Sydney Palmer-Leger (2022) and
Julia Richter (2021) also sweeping both disciplines in that span. In addition,
Novie McCabe was the women's freestyle MVP in 2023.
The RMISA will announce the alpine MVPs on Friday.
Lavén scored a league-leading 151 points in freestyle races during the regular season, even in sitting out the Denver Invitational freestyle race for a rest day. In classic, she tallied 197 points—a commanding 58-point cushion in the MVP standings. She was named RMISA Skier of the Meet for the Utah Invitational.
Joining the Utes this season from Täby, Sweden, Lavén has recorded a podium result in all of her 11 starts prior to next week's NCAA Championships. Seven of those podiums were victories, including a run of six straight starts between both races at the Utah and Montana State invitationals, plus the classic events at both Denver and Alaska Fairbanks.
Lavén returned to the top step of the podium in the 20K freestyle during the RMISA Championships, which also counted as an individual West regional championship. She will make her NCAA Championships racing debut next week in New Hampshire.
