GIRDWOOD, Alaska – Helped by three podiums, the Utah Ski Team began the alpine portion of the Alaska Anchorage Invitational with giant slalom competitions at Alyeska Resort on Wednesday.
Utah is in front in the team standings for the meet, tallying 509.5 points to date after the Nordic half of the UAA Invitational took place in early January. The Utes' point total is 28.5 in front of Colorado (481) with Denver in third (450.5).
In today's women's GS, Utah's 96 points gave the Utes the team victory in that event, while the men (79.5 points) placed second behind Colorado.

Despite a challenging day throughout the race field in terms of DNFs, all 11 athletes (5 women, 6 men) who started for Utah finished both runs.
Women's Race
Kaja Norbye (1:30.30) and
Claire Timmermann (1:30.46) took the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, in the women's giant slalom with
Kaila Lafreniere (1:31.46) taking seventh.
Norbye was top-three on both of her runs, sitting in third at the flip with an opening time of 44.86 seconds. Her second run clocked at 45.44 seconds, again third-best in the field of 36 athletes. Timmermann was fourth after Run 1 (44.94 seconds) and was top-five in the afternoon after coming down the hill in 45.52 seconds.
After winning the second run, Lafreniere climbed from 13
th up to seventh in the final results. Her second run went on the books at 45.11 seconds.
In addition, the Utes had a top-12 finish from
Evelina Fredricsson while
Melanie Dahlberg was 17
th.
Men's Race
Simen Strand led Utah in the men's GS, sharing bronze (1:32.55) with Denver's Pietro Motterlini.
Johs Braathen Herland took seventh (1:32.77) and
Sindre Myklebust (1:32.90) put on a performance that ensured all of Utah's scoring came from the top-nine.
Herland's result included a top-four first run (47.78 seconds).
After racing for a stretch on the European Cup and Nor-Am circuits,
Raphael Lessard made his return to RMISA competition today and placed 10
th. Though he had the 32
nd start position, Lessard placed 13
th on the first run before his second-fastest final run put him in the top-10 for the final results.
Wilhelm Normannseth was 23
rd and
Oliver Parazette placed 26
th.

Today's giant slalom began a stretch of four straight days of alpine competition for the Utah Ski Team—entirely at Alyeska Resort. The Utes will race another GS on Thursday, this time as part of the RMISA Championships which double as the NCAA West Regional.
Friday and Saturday will be host to slalom. Friday's events will wrap up the Alaska Anchorage Invitational with Saturday's docket included in the RMISA Championships.
The Nordic regular season schedule concluded this past Monday, with the Utes set to race on Friday (7.5K classic) and Saturday (20K freestyle) as part of the RMISA Championships. Nordic events will be in Anchorage at Kincaid Park.
