FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
Erica Lavén took silver while
Brian Bushey finished third in 10K freestyle interval start races on Monday as the Utah Ski Team finished up the Alaska Fairbanks Invitational at the UAF Competition Ski Trails.
Utah finished the meet second in the team standings, tallying 307 points in the two-day, Nordic-only competition. Denver was the winner with 345 points and UAF (291.5) rounded out the top-three.
Director of skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said, "it was another good day for the team. Erica was right in it until the end and both Selma and Celine fought hard today. Brian had just returned from Europe (and the U23 World Championships) before this trip, and he showed today that he is on his way back to peak shape. It is also great to see
Carl Rune getting better every week.
"We will have a few more teammates joining us for Regionals later this week. By then, we should be competing to be the top team. In the meantime, not bad at all to finish second here with the minimum number of athletes."
Men's Race
Utah was represented on the podium by
Brian Bushey, who placed third with an interval start time of 23:27.2 in the 10K freestyle race.
Carl Rune turned in a ninth-place result (24:06.9), half a second behind Colorado's Johannes Flaaten.
Zachary Jayne added a top-19 performance with a time of 24:48.9 for Utah.
Rune did a nice job to climb up the field after sitting 14
th on the first lap. He made it up to ninth at the 5K split and got as high as eighth after three laps.
Women's Race
Erica Lavén led for much of the race and into the final lap, but UAF's Kendall Kramer pulled in front late as Lavén ultimately finished second (26:13.0).
Selma Nevin gave the Utes a top-seven result (27:22.4), helped by a second lap that was third-best in the field.
In addition,
Celine Mayer placed 13
th to score key points for the team.
Between yesterday's classic sprints and today's 10K freestyle, Utah tallied a meet-leading 170 points in the women's races.
