PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior
Elias Petersen took the top spot on the men's 1-meter springboard as the University of Utah diving program opened competition at the Big Al Invitational on Thursday.
After finishing second in prelims, Petersen used a season-high 334.85 list score to take the top spot in finals. This marks his second win on the event this season and his third overall event crown after winning on both the 1- and 3-meter boards against Colorado Mesa.
"Elias did really well tonight," head diving coach
Richard Marschner said. "He's still rounding into form and he's got a lot of upward trajectory still, so it's nice to see him get a 'W' tonight."
On the women's side,
Callie Eaglestone,
Cierra Cole and
Annalise Shrader all advanced to the finals on the women's 3-meter springboard with season-best marks in both the finals and prelim rounds.
"I can't say enough about the freshmen – Cierra and Annalise – and Callie obviously taking third," Marschner added. "They're really figuring out how to dive and compete at this level so it was exactly what they needed to build some confidence going forward."
Eaglestone placed third in prelims with a 279.80 list score while Cole finished sixth with a 250.00 and Shrader earned a 240.70. Cole and Shrader's results marked new collegiate bests for the freshman duo. All three improved upon their scores in the finals, with Eaglestone logging a 302.75 to place third, Cole a 265.50 to finish fifth, and Shrader earned a 264.05 for sixth place.
Alex Just and
Attila Bernatsky placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the consolation finals of the 1-meter, finishing with scores of 240.85 and 237.40.
Sarah Kauffman made her season debut in the women's 3-meter, finishing 19th.
