SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Utes women's basketball continues the 2025-26 season with another in-state rival matchup with Utah Valley. The Utes will take on the Wolverines in Salt Lake City on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Military Appreciation Game.

LAST TIME OUT
The Utah women's basketball team picked up a 90-53 win over Utah State in the first road game of the year. Utah had five score in double figures and were led by Lani White's 19 points. Avery Hjelmstad contributed 16 to the Utes totals. Utah kept Utah State to single digit scores in the first and third quarters. The Utes also managed 25 assists and put up 39 points from the bench.
THE UTES
Utah returns four key contributors from the 2024-25 season including
Maty Wilke,
Samantha Crispe,
Brooke Walker and
Reese Ross. This year the Utes welcome back
Lani White who played at Utah for her freshman and sophomore seasons. White spent her junior season at Virginia Tech but has returned to finish her collegiate career where she started it all, as a Ute. The Utes welcome one true transfer in
Kamryn Mafua and four freshmen in
LA Sneed,
Ella Todd,
Avery Hjelmstad and
Evelina Otto.
THE KEY IS WILKE
Maty Wilke is Utah's top returner. She finished last season just shy of the elite 50/40/90 status. Wilke is shooting 43.8% from the field, 40.0% from three and 100% from the line while averaging 9.5 points per game. Wilke is second on the team in made three pointers with four so far this season. She's averaging 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists so far this season. Wilke has 898 total points in her collegiate career and is just 102 points away from the exclusive 1,000 point club.
OFF THE BENCH
Utah is No. 42 in the NCAA in Bench Points Per Game and is currently leading the Big 12. The Utes are averaging 37.0 bench points per game. Of Utah's 178 total points scored on the season, 76 have been scored from off the bench.
Avery Hjelmstad is leading the Utes off the bench with her 15.0 points per game.
LA Sneed has made a statement coming in off the bench while leading the team in assists with 11 total on the season. Utah's bench has outscored the opponents bench 76-36 so far this season The Utes are undefeated this season (2-0) when the bench scores 30 or more points.
HEAD COACH GAVIN PETERSEN
Petersen enters his second season and first full season as head coach. He was named the head coach of the Utah women's basketball team on Nov. 19, 2024 just four games into the 2024-25 season. He has a 21-8 record in his career. Petersen became the fastest coach in program history to get a Top-10 victory when he led the Utes to a 78-67 win over No. 3 Notre Dame (11/30/24). He brings 23 seasons of college coaching experience to the role, he is in his 11th season overall with the Utes and spent the previous five years as associate head coach under Lynne Roberts.
Petersen has been a part of the staff that has led the Utes to seven postseason appearances—including four NCAA tournaments and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen—and five 20-win seasons, as well as regular appearances in the AP Top 25.
SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY
Utah Valley has a 2-0 record so far on the season and are coming off a 64-60 win over LMU. Utah Valley is led by head coach Dan Nielson who is in his seventh season in Orem. He has a 78-94 record at the helm of UVU. The Wolverines are averaging 65 points per game through their first two games while allowing opponents to score 51 points per game. Utah Valley is shooting 42.4% from the field, 37.1% from three, and 54.8% from the free-throw line across their opening two games. On the glass, UVU is averaging 34.5 rebounds per game, compared to opponents' 38.0 boards per game.
UVU has three averaging 10+ points per game in Tessa Chaney (13.5), Amanda Barcello (13.0) and Halle Nelson (13.0). Tessa Chaney leads the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game, shooting 52.2% from the field and is averaging 4.5 rebounds per game. This is will be the tenth time the Utes and Wolverines have played. The last time the Utes and the Wolverines matched up was Nov. 11, 2022 where the Utes came out with a 97-27 win. Utah has an 8-0 record playing UVU in the Huntsman Center.
NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

2025-26 SEASON NEED TO KNOW
- Utah is coming off its fourth consecutive 20-win season and fourth NCAA Tournament appearances. Head Coach Gavin Petersen enters his second season at the helm of the Utes and 11th overall season at Utah.
- The Utes are returning seven from last year's squad including key contributors Maty Wilke, Reese Ross, Samantha Crispe and Brooke Walker.
- Utah welcomes back Lani White who spent the 2022-23 and 2023-24 season with Utah before spending the 2024-25 season at Virginia Tech.
- The Utes have five true newcomers on the roster this year in transfer Kamryn Mafua and freshmen Ella Todd, Evelina Otto, LA Sneed and Avery Hjelmstad

UP NEXT
Utah will host an old familiar Pac-12 foe in Washington Nov. 15 before hitting the road to the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase where the Utes will take on Syracuse (Nov. 21) and UConn (Nov. 23). Utah's next home game will be Nov. 26 against in-state foe, Weber State at 7 p.m.
