SALT LAKE CITY – The
Alex Jensen Era officially began Monday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center with the Utah men's basketball team defeating the San Jose State Spartans, 85-74, to kick off the 2025-26 season.

Seydou Traore led Utah with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. The junior forward from New York also set a new career-high in three-pointers, connecting with five triples. Fifth-year guard
Don McHenry netted 16 points (5-for-11 FG) and led the team with nine rebounds (tied with
Keanu Dawes) – which was a new career high.

Traore got the Runnin' Utes season started with a fast break dunk, the team's first bucket of the season, at 19:24. A tip-in layup from McHenry on Utah's next offensive possession tied the game (4-4) with 17:59 left before the break.

Utah found it's groove in the middle of the frame, firing off a 9-0 scoring run capped off by a driving layup from transfer guard
Terrence Brown to go ahead 27-20 with 10:07 left in the half.

Utah's defense forced 10 turnovers in the first half, converting those opportunities into 18 points, compared to the Spartans three points off turnovers.
McHenry, the All-CUSA Second Team transfer from Western Kentucky, led Utah with a team-high 12 points (4-for-6 FG) and six rebounds midway through the game as Utah took a 44-38 advantage into the locker room.
Down 64-63 midway through the second frame, a three from Traore at 9:14 gave Utah the 66-64 lead that broke San Jose State's 7-0 run. Traore took over in the second half, posting 18 points (7-of-8 FG) – 10 more than the next highest scorer on either team.
From that point forward, the Runnin' Utes never relinquished their lead and jumped ahead by as many as 12 points (their largest lead of the night) before the final buzzer sounded out to claim the 84-75 victory.
