SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team locked up an 87-69 victory against the Holy Cross Crusaders inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center Monday night, improving to 3-0 on the season.
Â
Terrence Brown led the Runnin' Utes with 21 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Keanu Dawes neared double-double territory with 14 points (6-of-8 FG) and 9 rebounds. Freshman guard
Obomate Abbey was one of five Utah players in double-figures. The Finnish native recorded 10 points (3-of-4 FG), 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in 24 minutes of action.Â
Â
Coming off a career-high 36-point outburst against Weber State, Brown put the Utes (3-0) ahead early with a smooth pull-up jumper on the first offensive possession of the contest. Shortly after, freshman
Kendyl Sanders unleashed the highlight play of the period – dropping his defender and drove to the basket to give Utah a 17-12 advantage.Â
Â
Minutes later, a driving layup from Sanders at the 10:42 mark opened a 9-0 scoring run that closed with a layup from
Don McHenry that put the Runnin' Utes ahead 29-17 with 9:14 left.Â
Â
Utah extended its advantage in the ensuing minutes before a hook shot from
Josh Hayes put the team ahead 43-30 with 3:47 remaining in the opening frame. Hayes finished the half (and the game) with a perfect 4-of-4 shooting split from the field for eight points and a team-high five rebounds as Utah took a 48-34 advantage into the locker room. Â
Â
The Utes and the Crusaders (0-3) traded buckets coming out of the break before Utah lurched forward with a 7-0 scoring run capped off by a jumper from Abbey that moved the score to 60-46.
Â
Utah maintained its lead through the remainder of the period, extending its lead by as many as 18 points before closing out with an 87-69 victory over the Crusaders.Â
Â
With the win, Utah has now started the season 3-0 for the fifth-consecutive season. Meanwhile, head coach
