PULLMAN, Wash. – The University of Utah Men's Golf team commanded all three rounds of the Palouse Collegiate to secure the tournament victory, its first since 2021. The Utes were headlined by
Sergio Jimenez, who notched his first collegiate tournament title while breaking the school record for best 54-hole score.
"The boys were incredible. All week it was an amazing performance from everybody, one through five in the lineup," said head coach
Garrett Clegg. "It's just a great way to start the year. It's been a few years since we've won so to come out and start the season with a big time win just really sets the tone for what we want to accomplish. It's a great way to get going."
"Sergio set a new scoring record by seven strokes and got individual win…we've never had anybody at 21-under par which is an incredible performance. Gabe [Palacios] added the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history behind Sergio so that's incredible to have the two best tournaments performances in the history of the program happen in the same event…it was fun to be a part of."
The Utes final 18-hole performance was the exclamation point to a stellar three rounds at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club. In Tuesday's 36 holes, Utah tied the school record for the lowest team score in a single round of play during the first round (266) and later added the third-lowest team score in program history during the second round (267). This led to the Utes breaking the previous 36-hole team score school record, putting together a score of 533 to outshoot the former record by 11 strokes. After another exceptional round on Wednesday, the Utes shattered the 54-hole school record, totaling a score of 800 to dethrone the 823 team score at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in 2021.
Jimenez continued to dominate the field into Wednesday, putting together an 8-under 63 performance to secure his first-place finish. Jimenez started off strong on the front nine, grabbing a birdie on the third hole and adding an eagle on fifth hole to head into the back nine 3-under. The Spaniard continued his excellent play into the back half of the course and tallied another red mark before recording back-to-back eagles on the 14
th and 15
th holes. Following a bogey, Jimenez closed out the final nine holes 5-under to lock in his first collegiate tournament crown.
Gabriel Palacios shined on the course in the tournament, finishing the first 36 holes in third place and followed up his stellar second round with a strong third round to jump one spot for his best collegiate finish, settling into second. The final 18 holes began with a bogey, but two birdies and an eagle on the fifth hole set him up 3-under halfway through the course. Palacios wouldn't miss a beat in the back nine, tallying two birdies over the last four holes to close out the round 5-under. The sophomore's 15-under 198 score is the second-best 54-hole score in program history, just behind Jimenez's score of 192.
Brandon Robison was the only other Ute inside the top 15 of the individual leaderboard, shooting one stroke under par for the day to land in 12
th place with a tournament score of 8-under 205. Robison's 8-under was just two strokes behind his season-best finish last season.
Davis Johnson also had a great outing on Wednesday, contributing his best score of the tournament to notch a top 20 placement. Johnson got things started with birdies on his third and fourth holes before racking up three more red marks across holes 15-18 to add 3-under on the back nine. A double bogey on his final hole leveled his score at 3-under 68 but used the quality round to launch into 20
th place. The Ute finished the tournament 6-under, tying his second-best score to par from his redshirt-sophomore season.
Braxton Watts added a score even with par in the final round to conclude the tournament 3-under 210 while ranking 32
nd.
Peter Jung was the only Utah golfer taking swings as an individual and jumped 13 spots on the final day of the tournament to place in 72
nd.
