Utah battles in 5-2 loss to No. 9 USC

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis program was defeated 5-2 by No. 9 USC on Sunday afternoon. After the loss, Utah's record moved to 10-8 overall.
"I'm really proud of the team's fight today," said head Coach Ric Mortera. "It's been a tough stretch of matches but watching how this young team is facing these challenges only gives me confidence in what we can achieve. Great job to Kat [Lyman] and Yuhan [Liu] today in beating some high quality opponents. Overall, I am looking forward to continuing to get back to work and seeing where this season takes us."
Utah 2, USC 5
The Utes battled hard in doubles competition. Sara Akid and Yuhan Liu faced No. 54, Parker Fry and Grace Piper on court No. 3, where they fell to the Trojan duo 6-2. On the first court, Marcela Lopez partnered up with Ana Luiza Cruz against No. 14 ranked Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney and claimed a 6-2 victory. With the doubles score even at one apiece, Kat Lyman and Samantha Horwood fought hard against Lily Fairclough and McKenna Koenig on the No. 2 court, but were defeated in a nail-biting tiebreak 7-6(5).Â
First to finish in singles was Kaila Barksdale, who was defeated on the third court by No. 56 ranked, Piper 6-2, 6-3.
Lyman picked up a big 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 68 Cayetano in the No. 4 spot. Cayetano was previously undefeated with a 16-0 record before Lyman came out victorious and handed Cayetano her first loss of the season.Â
Next to finish was Lopez who fell to No 100 Snow Han on the No. 1 court 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.Â
On court No. 2, Liu claimed a 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 28 Charney to keep the Utes in competition, however, USC clinched the match victory when Emma Kamper fell to Koenig on the fifth court 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.Â
On the No. 6 court, Akid claimed a strong 6-1 victory in the first set. After, she fell 6-3 in the second forcing the match into a third set. Akid battled into an intense tiebreak, but was ultimately defeated 7-6(5) to give USC the edge and a final score of 5-2.
UP NEXT
The Utes are next set to host another pair of Pac-12 matches on home courts, taking on Arizona State on Friday, April 12 and Arizona on Sunday, April 14.
