IN THE RANKINGS
Utah remained at No. 6 in the latest USTFCCCA Coaches Poll after an idle week the association announced on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The No. 6 ranking marks the third-straight week it has been ranked in the top-10 – all at the No. 6 position.
The Big 12 Conference Championships will feature four ranked teams according to the latest USTFCCCA Poll with No. 1 BYU, No. 4 West Virginia, No. 6 Utah and No. 18 Oklahoma State on hand in Waco.
FROM THE STARTERS BOX
The Women of Utah will send their same 10 from its last race to Waco this weekend for their first Big 12 Championships. Of the 10, only
Marika Couture (freshman) and
Sona Kourilova (junior) will be competing in their first collegiate conference championships meet.
LAST FIRST TIMES
The last time Utah competed in its first conference championships meet as a new member of a conference it finished eighth in 2011 in its first year in the Pac-12. Former All-American and recently minted Utah Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee Amanda Mergaert paced the Utes with a 10th-place finish.
Back in 1999, the Utes finished sixth as a team in its first season as members of the Mountain West behind Johanna Nielsen's seventh-place finish in the 5k race.
DOUBLE IT UP
Erin Vringer finished the regular-season with two Big 12 Runner of the Week honors – both after a top-10 and a top-3 finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational and Dellinger Invitational, respectively. Her two awards this season tied her with Arizona State's Judy Chepkoech and also ties them with 24 other athletes all-time in the Big 12 Conference for most weekly awards in a single-season.
UP NEXT
Utah will now get a few weeks to recover and prepare for the NCAA Mountain Regionals – which is arguably the toughest regional year in and year out. This year's regional is set to take place on Friday, Nov. 15, at Washoe County Golf Course in Reno, Nev., and hosted by the Nevada Wolfpack.
