Women's Tennis wraps up Texas A&M Invite

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah women's tennis competed at the Texas A&M Invitational over the weekend, with several Utes finding success.Â
"We got some very valuable experience over the weekend," said head coach Ric Mortera. "Coach Kopinski and I are really pleased with how the majority of the team progressed throughout the fall. The team has done a great job of focusing on the right things throughout this semester and we are looking forward to getting back home and continuing to focus on our development and the areas we need to improve on in preparation for the spring."
Utah duo Emma Kamper and Yuhan Liu found themselves victorious in doubles, initially defeating #94 Daria Smetannikov and Jeanette Mireles 6-2 from Texas A&M. This was Kamper and Liu's first ranked win. Kamper and Liu continued their success in the next round, overcoming Grabriela Cortes and Elena Trencheva from Houston 6-2.Â
On day two of the doubles draw, Kaila Barksdale and Isabella Pitchford claimed a 6-1 victory over Baylor duo Lauren Littell and Lindsay Patton.
Several Utes found victory in singles. Sara Akid picked up two singles wins. She first defeated Houston's Sonya Kovalenko 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3), and then later claimed a victory over Houston's Cortes, 6-3, 6-2. Kamper also defeated Cortes from Houston 6-1, 6-3. Kamper continued her success heading into day two, overcoming Baylor's Sierra Berry 6-3, 6-3.
Claiming a pair of victories in singles, Pitchford chalked up a win over Houston's Trencheva with a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 scoreline. She then followed up by defeating Baylor's Patton 6-2, 6-2. Liu took a victory on day two, defeating SMU's Skelton 6-0, 6-3.Â
Utah had two more Utes claim victories on day two in Barksdale and Ana Cruz. Cruz defeated Danielle Tuhten from Baylor, 6-3 6-3, while Barksdale secured her victory over Arkansas' Kacie Harvey 6-4, 6-1.
