SALT LAKE CITY – Back at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center for the first time in over a month of play, the University of Utah women's tennis team rolled to a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon against the Utah State Aggies. The match marked just the third home match of the season for the Utes after the last seven have been road or neutral site contests.
"First of all, we are so excited to be back home and be able to play in front of our fans," said head coach
Ric Mortera. "We had a couple bumps along the way, but overall I'm happy with how we played today. We were able to execute very well and we are going to build off of that as we look forward to playing a good Denver team tomorrow."
The top two doubles teams for Utah showed compete control early in the match and quickly earned the Utes a 1-0 lead.
Madeline Lamoreaux and
Emily Dush topped Lucy Octave and Gabrielle Dekkers with a score of 6-1 in the first win of the day. The No. 16-ranked duo of
Madison Tattini and
Whitney Hekking then sealed the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 spot over Hannah Jones and Sidnee Lavatai, also posting a 6-1 victory to remain unbeaten on the season with a record of 9-0 as a pair.
Hekking carried the momentum into singles play and carded a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory over Gabrielle Dekkers at the No. 3 position to put the Utes up 2-0. Following her doubles partner, Tattini then followed with a win of her own on the No. 1 court after besting Utah State's Lucy Octave with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
With the score at 3-1 after a win by Utah State at the No. 2 spot, Dush posted the third straight-set win for the Utes in singles and clinched the match at the No. 4 position. Dush defeated Zara Ryan with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action tomorrow at the Eccles Tennis Center to take on the No. 33 Denver Pioneers at 11 a.m. MT. A live stream for the match can be found
