Kolbi Sims earned two new PR's and won the 800m title in strong showing.
LUBBOCK, Texas — Senior Kolbi Sims opened the weekend of racing for Utah on Thursday competing in her first pentathlon of the season and tied the school record that's been standing since 2007.Â
The native of Eagle, Idaho, started her day racing in the 60m hurdles where she won her heat in a nail biter, posting a pentathlon PR of 8.85 to top Megan Kirby of Abilene Christian (8.86) by a tenth of a second. With her time, Sims finished in ninth earning 941 points and sat right behind Sklar Sieben (8.84) of Arizona - who she placed in front of in her record setting performance in the heptathlon at the Pac-12 Championships last season.Â
In the jump events, Sims placed eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.68m (5'6"), just shy of her PR (1.69m), on her second attempt before failing to clear the height of 1.71m (5'7.25") on her next three jumps. Sims captured another top-10 finish in the long jump, recording a distance of 5.45m (17'10.75") on her last attempt of the event.Â

The shot put event saw Sims earn another pentathlon PR on her second throw and posted a distance of 10.96m (35'11.5") to earn sixth-place. She then ran a speedy 800m where she won the event, beating out the second-place finisher by a solid four seconds.Â
With Sims finishing in the top-10 of every event, she was able to consistently rack up the points and totaled 3,891 - which was good for seventh-place overall and tie the school record U of U Hall of Famer Amanda Feigt posted back in February of 2007. Sims topped her previous PR by more than 200 points which she set last season at the Ed Jacoby Invite.Â
"Outstanding effort for the first multi event of the season. That's a great start knowing that there are still events to work on and more points to go get," head coach Kyle Kepler said.Â
The Utes will be back on the track tomorrow for day two of the Texas Tech Invite and will get underway with the UW Invite tomorrow evening. The running events at Texas Tech are slated to begin at 4 p.m. (MT) while the women of Utah will kick off the UW Invite at 8:45 p.m. (MT).Â
