SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Soccer earned its fourth shutout in the last five games but could not find the net itself in a 0-0 draw with Butler
"It took us a while to get going tonight, but I thought we played with great energy and determination in the second half and overtime periods," head coach
Rich Manning said.
"I think our defense is playing so well," senior
Tavia Leachman said. "We are improving every game and getting more cohesive. I think we are really connecting well and that is what has helped us keep our opponents from scoring."
Utah created some early chances as
Courtney Talbot fired high and Leachman's header from a corner was right at Butler keeper Stephanie Rodriguez.
Carly Nelson made consecutive stops on Anja Savich and Katie Soderstrom and finished with seven saves for her fifth shutout of the season. Nelson made two more saves in the half, denying Macy Miller and Celia Gaynor.
The Utes also had opportunities to get the early goal as Talbot,
Holly Daugirda and
Haylee Cacciacarne all took tries. In the opening stages of the second half, Talbot fired one to the far left corner but the Butler defender was in the wrong place at the wrong time for the Ute freshman, clearing the ball of the line with her shoulder.
A foul by the Bulldogs created a great chance from a free kick and
Alexis Rushlow's attempt narrowly missed the top right corner of the goal. Rushlow,
Kaitlyn Conley and Daugirda all created scoring chances that resulted in key saves by Rodriguez as the second half came to a scoreless end.
Utah was the dominant side in both extra periods with
Kylee Geis and Talbot coming close in the first 10-minute stanza. The Utes best chance in overtime was courtesy of Rushlow. The junior had her initial try saved from close range and her rebound attempt was blocked out of play. Over the 110 minutes of game action, Utah finished with 19 shots and 13 corner kicks.
"We became more aggressive as the game progressed," Manning stated. "We were able to get into some dangerous areas and create some good chances. Butler was a very good team and credit to them for a quality game. I anticipate we will start more quickly on Sunday."
"Every game during the non-conference schedule, we have just been getting better," Leachman added. "I think we are pretty confident knowing what we are capable of with Pac-12 play right around the corner."
Utah is back at home for to close non-conference play with San Diego. Fans can get their Sunday Sundaes with kick-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
