MALIBU – The No. 16 Utah volleyball team cruised after dropping its opening set against to Pepperdine in a four-set victory (20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-13) in their first match in the Pepperdine Asics Classic in Malibu, California.
Berkeley Oblad hit a career milestone picking up her 400
th career block. She is the 13
th player in program history to reach that mark.
Dani Drews led the Utes with 18 kills hitting .282. She also had 4.0 blocks and five digs.
After Pepperdine came out on fire and won the first set 25-20, Utah settled in and locked down the Waves the rest of the match. In the second set, the Utes held Pepperdine to a -.067 hitting percentage and in the fourth Pepperdine hit .030.
In the second, Utah took an early five-point lead. Pepperdine came back twice, but the Utes refused to let them come all the way back eventually taking the set after a Drews kill and a block by
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres and
Phoebe Grace.
Pepperdine had a lead in the third set, but Utah ran off seven straight to go up 15-10. The Waves hung around and got back within one, but Utah never let them tie things up again as they took their first lead in the match 2-1.
With a victory on the road in sight, the Utes shut the door quickly on Pepperdine in the fourth taking a 10-2 lead. Unlike previous sets, Pepperdine couldn't get back into this one as they pushed their lead out to as much as 12 and closed out the set 25-13.
Grace was a monster at the net finishing with 10.0 blocks , while also having six kills hitting .857. Ka'aha'aina-Torres had 46 assists, six digs and 4.0 blocks, and
Brianna Doehrmann had a match-high 10 digs.
The win moves Utah to 8-0 on the season and will now look forward to a matchup with No. 6 Pittsburgh at 11 a.m. MT and a rematch with Cal Poly at 6 p.m. MT. on Saturday, September 14.
