SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Soccer played Oregon State to a 1-1 draw this evening as
Holly Daugirda's third goal of the season maintained her team's unbeaten record at home.
The senior scored in the 22
nd minute to put her side on top in the first Pac-12 game at the new Ute Field.
Courtney Talbot provided the assist that was the first of her collegiate career.
"It was the almost the same as the first goal I scored this season," Daugirda said. "Last time, Aleea set me up and tonight it was Courtney. Last time I hit it with my left foot and tonight I did it with my right. Pretty similar set up and everything."
Utah almost opened the scoring two minutes prior to Daugirda's goal when
Alexis Rushlow's screamer slammed off the crossbar and was cleared away by the Beaver defenders. After the goal,
Carly Nelson made an immediate save from point-blank range and at the other end,
Hailey Stodden,
Courtney Talbot and
Anna Escobedo all had attempts at adding to the lead, but were unsuccessful as the half came to a close.
Oregon State changed their formation in the second half and caused some problems for the Utes.
"They went to a 3-5-2 and the forward was also dropping in so we were a little out-numbered in the midfield," Daugirda added. "It's not like we could call timeout so we had to get adjusted and rely on people coming in from the bench to help with directions."
Utah did create a pair of opportunities from corner kicks as
Haylee Cacciacarne and
Tavia Leachman came close to scoring. The warning signs were apparent when the clock struck the hour mark when
Emali Mackinnon, making the first start of her career in defense, made an outstanding block to keep the Utes in front. The visitors got their goal in the 75
th minute from Sophie Conrad, setting up a frantic finish.
After
Kristin Fairbairn unleashed Utah's last real scoring attempt in regulation,
Hailey Stodden and
Ireland Dunn had glimpses at a game-winner in extra time. The best chance of them all may have come to Mackinnon, who stung the palms of OSU goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba in the 108
th minute on a low line drive.
"We just have to focus on the positives," Daugirda said. "Personally, that was my third goal tonight. That is more than I had my first three years, so I try to see that silver lining. We have it in us to get wins, rather than draws. We are frustrated, I am not going to lie, but we create so many good things. We see it in the film study. It comes down to capitalizing. Another positive aspect we can switch our focus to is that we have a pair of practices to get this out of our system and in the right mindset for Sunday."
The Utes are back at home on Sunday for a contest at 1 p.m. against Oregon. You can catch the game live on Pac-12 Plus (Facebook) and via UtahUtes.com
