SALT LAKE CITY – No. 19 Utah dropped its first match of the year to Saint Mary's in the Utah volleyball classic in a five-set match at the Huntsman Center on Saturday, August 25.
Dani Drews set career highs in both digs and kills with 24 kills and 20 digs.
Bailey Choy also had a double-double with 49 assists and 15 digs.
The first set was close early, but at one point the Utes ran off an 8-2 run to gain the advantage. Once Utah had the lead, they didn't look back and closed the set on a 10-2 run to take the first set 25-14.
The Utes had a three-point lead early in the second set, but the Gaels stayed in it going on a 5-1 run to even the set up. Utah went on a run late in the set and ended up having two set points, but couldn't cash in. Saint Mary's ended the set winning three points in a row to tie the match.
The Gaels carried some momentum over into the third set, but Utah went on a 5-0 run to take the lead back 8-5. Later in the set,
Phoebe Grace stepped up with a kill and a block allowing the Utes to take control of the third set. Leading 20-18, Utah closed out the set on a 5-1 run to go up 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set was another tight one, but Drews took over early coming up with two kills and a block to push Utah up 12-9 forcing the Gaels to use a timeout.
Utah held a comfortable lead from there, but Saint Mary's fended off five match points and eventually went on a 3-0 run to win the fourth set and push the match to a fifth set.
Using the momentum they got from the end of the fourth set, Saint Mary's took an early 4-0 lead on Utah in the fifth. The Utes tried to recover, but the Gaels kept answering to eventually win the fifth set 15-11.
Grace finished with 11 kills on 14 attempts hitting .714 for the match. She also led the team six blocks.
Utah will now turn its attention to Denver as they play their last match of the Utah Volleyball Classic at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center.
