EUGENE, Ore. – Utah track and field student-athlete
Grayson Murphy won the first heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Thursday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships to qualify for Saturday's final.
Murphy ran the race in a personal-best time of 9:48.57, which lowers the school record she already holds in the event. The time was second among all competitors.
"Awesome race," Utah head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "She looked completely controlled and went out and forced the lead with about 800 to go. I'm incredibly proud. She is as cool as a cucumber. She always runs her race, she's tough when she needs to be and her technical steepling skills have really come to the forefront. It's going to be a brawl on Saturday to get into the top eight, and she'll be running for a national title to close out her college career. We'll get the recovery process going immediately and we'll be back here on Saturday."
Saturday's final is at 3:54 p.m. PT and will air on either ESPNU or ESPN2.
