Utes Fall to Washington, 4-2

SALT LAKE CITY – No. 35 Utah was unable to record a victory today against the University of Washington, as they fell 4-2. With this loss, the Utes dropped to 19-5 overall, 2-3 in Pac-12 conference play.
The Utes started off the match strong by earning the doubles point against Washington. Senior Egbert Weverink and his partner, Joe Woolley, were able to defeat Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer at the No. 1 position, with a final score of 6-2. No. 87-ranked Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim then sealed the point on the No. 2 court, topping Washington's Mitch Stewart and Jack Davis, 6-4, to give the Utes a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Huskies were able to rally. At the No. 5 spot, Cory was unable to record a victory against Jack Davis, as he fell with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Weverink then lost on the No. 3 court, as he was topped by Sommer, 7-5, 7-6. Santiago Sierra was the only player to record a singles victory for the Utes, defeating Amit Batta at the No. 4 position with a final score of 6-4, 6-4 to even the match at 2-2. Dan Little was then beaten on the No. 1 court by No. 73-ranked Mitch Stewart, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, to put the Huskies into winning position. Jack Davis was then able to defeat Utah's Joe Woolley at the No. 6 position, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, to give the Huskies the 4-2 victory.
Utah will be back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. for their last home match of the season at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. It will face off against the No. 41 Oregon Ducks. Prior to the match, there will be food for the first 1,000 fans starting at 11:30 a.m. while supplies last.
After doubles play concludes, the Utes will then hold a senior ceremony for Egbert Weverink and Santiago Sierra. They will be recognized for their accomplishments at the University of Utah. Post-match, the men's tennis team will also hold a party at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, where the team will recognize their loyal fan base and supporters.
