Utes Capture the Courtside Classic

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The Utah women's tennis team defeated the University of Minnesota today with a final score of 4-3, taking the title of the Courtside Classic.
"Today was a tough match on the Gopher's home court which made it twice as challenging," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I could not be more thrilled for Brianna Turley for getting it started and Jena Cheng and Taylor Calton for finishing it. This was a testament to eight young women refusing to be outcompeted."
The Utes started off with an early advantage by taking the doubles point over the Gophers. The doubles team consisting of Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley bested Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar at the No. 1 position, with a final score of 6-1. Taylor Calton and Whitney Turley then wrapped things up by getting a win of their own over Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei on the No. 3 court, with a score of 6-4.
Brianna Turley then got the Utes off to a strong start in singles with a win over Trina Kreinis at the No. 2 position, 6-1, 6-1. On the No. 4 court, Jena Cheng earned a win over Barbara Mancera after three sets and a final score of 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Taylor Calton then finished things up by defeating Camila Vargas Gomez at the No. 6 position, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to give the Utes the win and take the title of the Courtside Classic.
The Utah women's tennis team will be back in action next week, as they will return home for four matches at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. On Feb. 15th, the Utes will face off against Utah State at 6 p.m., followed by two matches on Feb. 17th against Denver at 1:00 p.m. and Weber State at 5:30 p.m. The Utes will then match up against Boise State on Feb. 18th at 11 a.m., to wrap up play for the weekend.
