MINNEAPOLIS - Utah Swimming capped an impressive first day at the Minnesota Invitational as three school records fell.
"It was an awesome day for the Utes," head coach
Joe Dykstra said. "We had 56 personal bests, three school records and an auto qualifier for NCAA's in the sprint relay. I am sure tons of additions to our top 10 lists were also made. We are really excited about our performances today and want to keep this rolling the next two days."
The day started with
Daniel McArthur breaking his own mark from the 2017 Pac-12 Championships by winning the 200 IM in 1:44.68.
Ethan Dillard finished second in 1:47.24 and
Jackson Cunningham broke into the Utah top 10 with a mark of 1:49.06.
The women were also impressive in the same event with Jordan Anderson breaking a mark that stood since 2009, with a 1:58.87. Aryanna Fernandes now stands third all-time, clocking in at 1:59.68. Darby Wayner placed third this evening (2:02.20) and Grace Horvath cracked Utah's top 10 with a mark of 2:03.13. In the morning prelims, Rebecca Zeiger swam a 2:01.85, the seventh-fastest time in Utah history.
More success came in the 200 free relay as the team of
Clay Stoddard,
Rodolfo Moreira,
Felix Chiun and
Austin Phillips set a new Utah mark, winning the event in 1:17.36 and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Phillips and Moreira helped set the previous Ute mark at the 2016 NCAA Championships. The women's team of Fernandes, Gillian St. John, Audrey Reimer and Wayner also won the event, narrowly missing a new school mark by three-hundredths of a second.
The Utes also swept the 400 medley relays to cap the evening. Reimer, Genny Robertson, Fernandes and St. John finished three-tenths of a second off the school record pace (3:36.50). McArthur,
Andrew Britton,
Colten Montgomery and
Austin Phillips clocked on at 3:09.03
The men dominated the 50 free with Stoddard winning in 19.69, the fifth-fastest time in Utah history. Moreira may have finished behind his teammate in the evening's finals, but his preliminary time was enough to move him into fourth all-time (19.68). Phillips swam the seventh-fastest time in Utah history at 19.76 and all three Utes attained NCAA "B" cut marks.
St. John swam the third-fastest 50 free in Utah history for the women (22.45), also a NCAA "B" cut time. Emma Lawless was just behind her, placing fourth this evening in 23.60.
In the 500 free, Sara McClendon swam the fifth-fastest time in Utah history (4:47.19). Mandy Gebhart placed fourth overall with a time pf 4:52.39.
Rahiti De Vos won for the Ute men with a NCAA "B" cut time of 4:21.79. Newcomer
Tyler Klawiter swam the seventh-fastest time in Utah history (4:25.35) with
Robert King and
Brody Lewis impressing.
Nick Becker had the top time in the morning prelims (4:23.08), fourth-fastest in Utah history, but was disqualified in the evening finals.
The Utes are back in action tomorrow with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals beginning at 5 p.m.
