SALT LAKE CITY- The No. 16-ranked Utah Utes (11-2, 2-0) earned a sweep (25-19, 25-21, 25-12) over the California Golden Bears (9-4, 0-2) on Sunday afternoon to close out the first weekend of conference action.
Utah and Cal traded points early to open the match until
Berkeley Oblad registered her first kill of the afternoon to spark a 7-1 run, which would force the Golden Bears to call its first timeout of the set trailing 12-7. Cal countered out of the timeout, scoring four unanswered points to pull within 13-11. Leading 18-15, the Utes pushed the lead to 20-15 late in the set following back-to-back service aces from Oblad. Utah would take the first set 25-19 with three of the last four points of the set coming from kills recorded by
Adora Anae.
The second set started back-and-forth, but the Utes managed to build a 14-10 lead midway through the second set after a service ace from
Camryn Machado. Leading 18-14, Cal put together a 5-2 run to cut the gap to just 20-19. Kills from Oblad, Anae, and
Carly Trueman would help Utah close out the set, winning five of the next seven points to take the frame 25-21 and lead 2-0 in the match.
Leading 8-6 in the third set, a kill from Trueman began a 7-2 run to give the Utes a 15-8 lead over the Bears heading into the media timeout. With the Ute lead at 18-12, Utah would go on to score seven straight points to clinch the set, 25-12, and earn the sweep over the Bears. Utah recorded a .458 hitting percentage in the third set, while limiting Cal to a -.037 hitting mark.
This marks Utah's third straight sweep over Cal. The Utes had not swept Cal through the first 15 meetings of the series. Utah is now 10-8 all-time when facing the Bears.
Utah led Cal in all statistical areas of the match, leading in kills (46-33), hitting percentage (.407-.205), assists (40-31), service aces (4-3), digs (37-32), and total blocks (6.0-1.0).
Adora Anae led the way offensively with 14 kills on a .545 hitting percentage, while also adding in 8 digs.
Berkeley Oblad chipped in 11 kills for the Utes on a .625 hitting percentage and
Tawnee Luafalemana totaled in 8 kills.
Bailey Choy dished out 24 assists and totaled 6 digs, while Camryn Machado added in 13 assists.
Brianna Doehrmann recorded 7 digs in the win for Utah.
Utah is back in action next weekend beginning on Friday, Sept. 29, against Oregon at 6 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. Utah will face Oregon State on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. to close out the weekend.
