SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head volleyball coach Beth Launier announced Tuesday that assistant coach
JJ Van Niel has been named associate head coach for the Utes.
"JJ's vast wealth of experience in both the coaching volleyball world and analytics field have made him a valuable assistant over the last two years," said Launiere. "I am pleased to show my recognition of his talents and efforts by naming him associate head coach."
Van Niel just completed his second year as an assistant coach for the indoor squad and serves as the head coach for the beach volleyball team. In his two seasons with the Utes indoor team, Van Niel helped guide the Utes to a NCAA Tournament berth in 2016, while heading the beach volleyball team in its inaugural season.
Prior to making his move to Salt Lake City, Van Niel served as a consultant coach/scoutman for the USA Women's National Volleyball Team, where he also served as a team leader and assisted in group training since 2013. During his time with the USWNT, Van Niel was responsible for coordinating and performing various data analysis, game planning and assistance during on-court practices.
While with the USWNT, Van Niel helped lead the squad to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 U23 World Championships, a Silver Medal finish at the 2014 Volleymasters and a Gold Medal finish at the 2014 World Championships.
Van Niel spent the 2016 summer in Rio, serving as a scout coach for the U.S. Olympic Women's Volleyball Team.
Van Niel's coaching education includes being a USA Volleyball CAP Level III coach, working at the USA Volleyball High Performance Coaching Clinic and having completed both Gold Medal Square Level I and II programs.
Van Niel, who spent 12 years in the financial world before entering the volleyball-coaching field, is a 1998 graduate of USC, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Cum Laude.
