Utes Split Dual Matches with Marquette and Illinois-Chicago

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team capped off their road trip this weekend by falling to Marquette in a competitive match, 4-3. Then later in the day, the Utes swept the University of Illinois-Chicago 7-0, finishing off the weekend with a 1-2 record.

The Utes rolled through the Flames to cap the day. Egbert Weverink and David Micevski dominated in their victory against Carl Hedstrom and Marcelo Dib at the No. 1 postion, with a final score of 6-1. Joe Woolley and Azat Hankuliyev then took the doubles point for Utah, defeating Christian San Andres and Kailash Panchapakesan 6-3, at the No. 3 position.

The Utes then quickly finished singles play with wins in straight sets by Micevski, Sierra, Woolley, and Weverink. At the No. 3 spot, Parker McGuiness went into a tie breaker set against Marcelo Dib, by a final score of 6-2, 3-6, 10-2. Hankuliyev was also in a tie breaker set against Kailash Panchapakesan, with a final score of 5-7, 6-3, 10-7, at the No. 6 spot.

In doubles action against Marquette, the Utes took the early lead by taking the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Dan Little and Joe Woolley were victorious against Alvaro Verdu and Nick Dykema, with a final score of 6-4. Egbert Weverink and David Micevski then finished doubles play by defeating Kristiyan Trukov and Mackenzie Stearns 6-4, at the No. 2 position.

In singles action, Joe Woolley was off to a strong start for the Utes, cruising past Kristiyan Trukov at the No. 4 position, with a final score of 6-3, 6-4. Dan Little was the only other Ute in singles action to card a win, defeating Luke Smrek at the No. 2 spot, with a final score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The Utes will be back in action Wednesday March 15^th against the University of Lamar in Los Angeles, California. Play starting against the Cardinals is to be determined.
