LOS ANGELES - Utah Men's Swimming set a new school record and had nine competitors accomplish times good enough for NCAA consideration despite coming up short against No. 13 USC.
In the 100 breast, Jack Burton took first with a time of 53.64, matching the school record set by Ken Tiltges at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships. Burton would later take second in the 200 breast (1:57.86) and be one of seven student-athletes to reach a NCAA cut time.
Another individual win for the Utes was turned in by Daniel McArthur in the 200 IM. He came away with a time of 1:48.32. McArthur also took second in the 100 back (47.25) and both times were good enough for NCAA consideration.
Austin Phillips took first in the 200 free touching in at 1:37.78 with Rahiti De Vos following in second (1:38.53). De Vos also earned a second-place finish in the 500 free (4:28.58).
In the 1,650 free, Matteo Sogne just missed the top spot by touching in at 15:18.02. Liam O'Haimhirgin took second in the 100 free (44.61) and Ethan Dillard was second in the 200 IM (1:49.46). Colten Montgomery was also second in the 100 fly touching in at 47.62. Chris Taber joined Phillips, Sogne and Montgomery as the other Utes who made the cut for NCAA consideration, with a solid performance in the 200 fly, capping an outstanding day for the Utes.
Both relay teams also finished with runner-up performances. In the 200 medley relay, Paul Unger, Burton, Montgomery and McKay King came away with a time of 1:27.50. In the 400 free, the team consisting of King, Tommy Baker, O'Haimhirgin and Phillips touched in at 2:56.34.
On the boards, Connor Cain took fourth in the three-meter event tallying a total score of 310.35.
This was the men's last dual meet of the season. The Pac-12 Championships will begin on March 1 in Federal Way, Washington and run for four days.
