SAN FRANCISCO – Utah volleyball student-athletes
Brianna Doehrmann,
Bailey Choy and
Berkeley Oblad have each been named to the 2017 Pac-12 All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Thursday.
Â
Doehrmann, a sophomore libero/defensive specialist for the Utes earned first team honors, Choy, a sophomore setter for the squad, was named a second team honoree and Oblad, a junior middle blocker, was tabbed honorable mention. Oblad earns her second straight all-academic honor, while Doehrmann and Choy earn the honor for the first time in their careers.
Â
Doehrmann ranks second on the team with 346 digs on the year, but her 3.30 digs per set average ranks first on the squad and ninth in the Pac-12. She registered 10-plus digs in 18 matches and led the team with 20-plus digs in two matches on the season, which included a career-high 30 digs against UCLA back on Oct. 20. Doehrmann became the first Ute to register at least 30 digs in a match since 2008.
Â
Utah has had at least one Pac-12 first team selection dating back to 2012. At least two Utah players have earned all-academic honors every season since joining the league in 2011.
Â
Choy ranks first on the team and fifth in the Pac-12 with 1,130 assists. She ranks seventh in the conference with 9.50 assists per set and helped lead Utah to a conference-best 13.71 assists per set as a team. She totaled 50 assists or more in five matches this season, which includes a season-high 54 assists that she recorded twice this season.
Â
Choy, who became just the eighth player in school history to eclipse the 2,000 career assists mark earlier this season, was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. She is currently on the Academic All-American ballot.
Oblad tallied 277 kills and ranked second on the team - 10th in the Pac-12 - with a .316 hitting percentage. She tallied 134 total blocks and a 1.13 blocks per set average on the year. She totaled eight blocks or more in a team-high three matches this season.
Â
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 and be either a starter or significant contributor.
