SALT LAKE CITY – For the first time since 2005, the Utah volleyball team will host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, as announced by the NCAA Sunday night.
Utah (22-9, 13-7 Pac-12), who earned the No. 11 overall seed in the bracket, will be making its second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and will face Cleveland State (22-7) of the Horizon League in the first round on Thursday with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
"We are very happy with the 11
th seed," said Utah head coach
Beth Launiere. "It was one of our main goals going into the season to get one of the top 16 seeds and host. So that is one goal met and we hope to achieve more goals now that the tournament is about to begin. To be able to play in front of our fans at the Huntsman Center is great for us. They have been tremendous all season long and I really hope that they come out and support us this week."
The Utes will make their fourth appearance in the postseason tournament over the last five seasons and their 14
th overall in program history. Utah is one of four teams in the Salt Lake City sub-regional played at the Huntsman Center. High Point (24-7) and Purdue (22-9) will match up on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. MT, and the Utah-Cleveland State contest will follow. Winners from Thursday's matches will advance to the second round and meet at 7 p.m. MT on Friday, Dec. 1.
This will be Utah's third time hosting the opening rounds of the postseason tournament, with all three times to host coming under the direction of Launiere. This is Utah's highest seeding in the tournament. The Utes earned the No. 12 seed back in 2008, but played in the Clemson sub-regional.
The Utes finished in fourth place in the Pac-12 standings this season, marking the program's highest finish since joining the league in 2011. The 13 conference victories also mark the most league wins, surpassing last season's high mark of 11 wins.
Utah is 12-13 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, which includes a 3-1 mark in matches played at home.
This will mark the first-ever meeting for Utes facing Cleveland State. However, Utah is 4-0 all-time against teams from the Horizon League.
