Shainyan goes for singles crown, Weverink and Woolley for doubles title
SALT LAKE CITY – Slava Shainyan remained undefeated, rolling into the "A" flight singles championship, while Joe Woolley and Egbert Weverink will go for the doubles title after day two of the Utah Intercollegiate.
Shainyan moved to 4-0 in singles action with a captivating 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 victory over Sam Serrano of Utah State in the morning and a 6-2, 7-5 win over Sergiu Bucur in the afternoon.
Randy Cory captured his first singles match as a Ute with a smooth win over Felipe Acosta, 6-3, 6-4 then got back in the win column with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Valdemar Holm.
Weverink captured his third singles win of the tournament with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Jose Carvajal in the afternoon session.
Weverink and Woolley captured a doubles match for the second-straight day with a thrilling 7-6 win over Kostya Nesterenko and Robert Margitfalvi of Nevada, moving into tomorrow's championship match.
The final day of competition at Eccles Tennis Center begins with doubles play at 9 a.m.
