Three doubles teams into Round of 16
PROVO - No. 2 seed David Micevksi advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Mountain Regionals this evening, battling back for a 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 triumph over No. 16 Sam Tullis of BYU.
Micevski started his day with another three-set victory, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 over Felix Schumann of Northern Arizona. The junior is the last Ute standing in the main draw after No. 1 seed Dan Little fell to BYU's Sean Hill this evening, 7-6, 6-3. Little had no problem against No. 32 seed Phillip Stockmar of New Mexico in his first match, winning, 6-0, 6-3.
In consolation singles action, No. 20 Joe Woolley and Egbert Weverink remained alive. Woolleywon a pair of matches rather handily, topping Kasper Parlklo of Montana State, 6-3, 6-2 and then upsetting N0. 13 Sergiu Bucur of Utah State, 6-3, 6-2. Weverink was able to battle back for a win over Pedro Platzeck of Boise State, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5.
No. 14 Santiago Sierra was able to advance past Michael Kritzinger of Northern Colorado, 6-4, 6-0 but was then defeated by Alex Canalopoulous of Montana in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
In other singles action, Randy Cory and No. 7 Slava Shainyan were eliminated from the main draw after losing their first matches in the afternoon session and Azat Hankuliyev and Chase Stoner met the same fate in consolation play.
Over on the doubles side, all four Ute squads were victorious with three teams advancing into the main draw's Round of 16.
Little and Woolley, the No. 5 seeded duo, had no problem in an 8-3 over Denver and No. 16 seeds Shainyan and Cory did the same to Montana State. No. 9 seeds Weverink and Micevski were pushed but still managed to come away with an 8-7 win over Idaho. Sierra and Hankuliyev advanced in the consolation bracket with a walkover.
