Utes start slow on first day
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah started competition at the 2016 Utah Invitational Tournament on Friday. After losing both doubles matches in the morning, the Utes recovered by going 11-5 in singles action.
Four of the eight Ute competitors were making their collegiate debuts. Joe Woolley impressed with a pair of singles victories, while freshman Slava Shainyan, Azat Hankuliyev and Benjamin Heck each won matches on the day.
Lone senior Parker McGuiness, as well as juniors Egbert Weverink and Santiago Sierra each ran the table and won all of their matches, dropping only one set between them.
Dan Little, who impressed last fall, dropped two heartbreakers in singles play.
The Utes look to carry Friday's momentum into day two of the Utah Invitational on Saturday. First serve will take place at 9 a.m.
