PORTLAND, Ore. – The Utah Utes (7-2) posted a pair of wins at the North Marriott Harbour Challenge at the Chiles Center on Saturday, downing the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (25-20, 21-25, 25-11, 25-16) and the Portland Pilots (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) to finish undefeated in tournament play this weekend.
The Utes opened the day with a 3-1 win over CSUB (1-9) behind junior
Adora Anae and freshman
Bailey Choy's double-doubles. Anae tallied a team-high 17 kills and 11 digs, while Choy registered 36 assists and another 11 digs for the Red & White.
Junior
Tawnee Luafalemana (12 kills) and
Carly Trueman (10 kills) posted double-digit kill efforts for the Utes in the win, while senior
Alyssa Koenig led the charge at the net with a team-best and new season-high five total blocks.
Utah registered hitting percentages of .500 and .692 in the third and fourth sets, respectively, on the way to out-hitting the Roadrunners .398 to .172 in the match. The .398 hitting percentage was Utah's best in a single match since notching a .429 attacking effort against USC back on Nov. 7, 2014.
Utah went on to out-block CSUB 8.0 to 4.0 in total team blocks, registering a solo block and 14 block assists, compared to the Roadrunner's four block assists on the day.
Utah made quick work of the Pilots (4-5), downing the tournament host in sweeping fashion for the squad's fourth sweep of the season. The Utes tallied just one sweep in the 2015 campaign.
Anae again led the charge, collecting her third 20-kill effort of the season with a match-high 21 kills. She posted her sixth double-double of the season notching a team-high 15 digs on the night, as well.
Anae's offense was not just limited to what she could do with her swing on the attack, as she tallied a career-high five service aces on the evening, becoming the 12th player in school history to record at least five aces in a single match. Her five service aces is tied for third most in school history, matching sophomore
Megan Shughrou's five ace effort from last season.
Choy led the offense with 36 assists, while sophomore
Berkeley Oblad totaled a team-best five blocks at the net. Shughrou had a season-best 11 digs on the night, as well.
Utah posted a .227 hitting percentage, while limiting the Pilots to just a .106 hitting effort on the night. The Utes led in digs (51-43), assists (43-28) and service aces (7-4). Both teams tallied 9.0 total team blocks.
Anae finishes the weekend with 52 kills with a .385 hitting percentage, while junior
Carly Trueman added 27 kills. Anae added a team-best 31 digs and nine total blocks, while leading Utah to its first 3-0 record in a tournament since notching a 3-0 weekend at the Lipscomb Invitational back in 2014.
Anae was named the North Marriott Harbour Challenge Tournament MVP, while Luafalemana and Choy were both All-Tournament selections.
The Utes will be back in action with a mid-week match-up against No. 10 ranked BYU, this Thursday, Sept. 15. First serve is set for 7 p.m. MT at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo.
