SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 63 Utah women's tennis team fell to 10-4 this season after suffering a 4-1 defeat to the No. 26 Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday in the Pac-12 Conference at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Sophomore Margo Pletcher gave the Utes their lone point in the match after defeating Desirae Krawczyk, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 singles match.
"This was a tough loss today although I am proud of how we battled," Utah head coach Mat Iandolo said. "[Pletcher] had a huge win and that bodes well for the future."
Freshman Brianna Turley dropped the first set 6-4 and headed into a tie break with Ebony Panoho in the second set to try and keep the match alive for the Utes. Panoho proved to be too strong and clinched the second set and the match for the Sun Devils, 7-6 (8-6).
Senior Sarah Richter fell to Kassidy Jump defeated Sarah Richter, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 2 slot. Freshman Brianna Turley lost to Ebony Panoho, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) and freshman Taylor Calton suffered a similar fate to Sammi Hampton, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Jena Cheng's match against Stephanie Vlad was unfinished as was Alexia Petrovic's contest against Gussie O'Sullivan.
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point as they earned a 3-0 lead. Richter and Petrovic suffered a 6-2 loss to Desirae Krawczyk and Vlad. Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Calton fell to Sammi Hampton and Jump, 6-1. The match featuring Pletcher and Turley against Panoho and Alexandra Osborne went unfinished.
The Utes head out on the road to face Washington State in Pullman at 1:30 p.m. on Friday Mar. 18.
