Utes Move On at ITA Mountain Regionals

Three advance in the singles draw while all four doubles teams still alive
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Three Utes advanced to the Round of 32 in the main singles draw and all four doubles teams also moved on after the first day of competition at the ITA Mountain Regional.
No. 18 seed Joe Woolley was the first Ute in action this morning, knocking off Guilherme Scarpelli of Idaho 6-1, 7-5 and then beating Sebastian Eguez of Northern Arizona 6-3, 6-2.
Later in the day, No. 19 seed Santiago Sierra, defeated David Mottice of Air Force, 6-4, 6-3 and Aidan Carrazedo of BYU 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
No. 2 seed David Micevski only had to capture one match on the day after a first-round bye but he did his part, topping Rodolfo Jauregui of New Mexico, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.
In the doubles bracket, all four Utah teams will see action in the Round of 32 tomorrow. Dan Little and Slava Shainyan are the No. 3 seed but the other three pairings were all victorious this morning.
Parker McGuiness and Micevski knocked off Harun Ajanovic and Adi Zilberstein of Northern Arizona, 8-3. Meanwhile, Azat Hankuliyev and Sierra topped Mile Cilic and Sandro Lena of Nevada, 8-5, and the combo of Egbert Weverink and Woolley beat Lucas Coutinho and Esteban Santibanez of Idaho by the identical score.
No. 21-seeded Weverink won his first match of the day, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 over William Edin of Idaho State but lost 6-1, 6-4 to Sean Baklini of New Mexico. Hankuliyev was another Ute with a chance to advance after topping Dillon Launius of Air Force, 6-2, 6-1. However, he ran into a difficult opponent in No. 33 Stefan Cooper of Weber State and was pegged back, 6-2, 6-3.
It was a difficult day for a pair of Utes as the No. 11 seed, McGuiness, lost to Lucas Fumagalli of Air Force, 6-2, 6-4 after receiving a bye. Freshman Shainyan, seeded 15th, also had the morning off but couldn't use it to his advantage in a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 setback to BYU's JD Malan.
Two Utah players will continue on in the consolation bracket after dropping first-round matches. Benjamin Heck lost 7-6, 6-4 to No. 26 Sammy Serrano of Utah State and Little lost 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to Jesse Ruder Hook of Denver
The event is being held at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. Winners of the regional will advance to the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., November 3-6, 2016.
