BOZEMAN, Mont. - Sophomore transfer Egbert Weverink made his singles debut for Utah men's tennis with a splash winning the 2015 Bobcat Invitational. The 6'8? dutchman beat fellow teammate Matt Cowley in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
"After a tough result in doubles, it feels great to bounce back and win three singles matches to win the title here in Montana," said Weverink.
In the Blue Flight, senior Jamey Swiggart was on track to make it an all Ute party in Montana, winning the first set, 7-6, and taking an early break in the second set, but was unable to hold on for the victory, losing 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Utah State's Luis Lopez in the finals.
"We need to get better at competing and closing out matches when we put ourselves in position to close the job," said assistant coach Daniel Pollock. "We'll move forward from here knowing what we need to work on to be better for next week's home invitational tournament."
The Utes will have a quick turnaround, preparing for the annual Utah Invitational Tournament Friday September 25 through Sunday September 27 at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes will host Air Force, Montana State and Weber State and, weather permitting, will mark the first time the new outdoor facility will see competitive collegiate play. First serve is scheduled for 9am.
