BOZEMAN, Mont.- Continuing a successful 2015 cross country season, senior Susannah Hurst Spencer led the Utes at the Montana State Invitational with another top-five performance. Overall, the Utes claimed five of the top-ten spots en route to a first-place finish.
"We really ran well down the home stretch and got the job done," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Our top five runners ran especially well. They were maybe a little bit too conservative at the beginning of the race, but made up the gap and had just enough racecourse left to get the job done. As a group, we ran a terrific last 800 meters. Overall, I was very pleased with the effort. We were solid, ran a great team race and just wanted it more at the end of the race."
After redshirting last season, Hurst continues her streak of top-five performances with a fourth-place finish to lead the team. Hurst Spencer recorded a time of 17:35.05 and was followed by fellow senior Andrea Chavez in the sixth spot, with a time of 17:41.70.
Junior Jessica Sams followed closely in Chavez's footsteps, with a seventh-place time of 17:42.22. Rounding out the top-ten finishers was Shaylen Crook and Jocelyn Todd. Crook crossed the finish line in eighth place with a time of 17:44.19 and Todd earned tenth after recording a time of 17:49.54.
Other noticeable finishes for the Utes include: Becky Sarmiento (22nd, 18:06.45), Dana Snell (23rd, 18:09.90), Sadie Wassum (27th, 18:17.83) and Makenzie Clark (32nd, 18:36.96).
Overall, the Utes captured first in the team standings, tallying 35 points. Utah State earned second with 39 points, followed by Montana State with 73 points.
The Utes compete next on Oct. 2 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
