SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (10-11, 0-5 Pac-12) was defeated by No. 62 Washington (11-9, 1-4 Pac-12) Friday at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy. The Utes struggled to find success in singles after dropping the doubles point and sophomore Parker McGuiness netted Utah's solo point.
"After a poor start in doubles, we grabbed Washington by the throat in singles," said head coach Roeland Brateanu, "But we simply forgot to close."
The Huskies secured the doubles point after topping the Utes at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but the Utes responded in singles play, securing the first set at the Nos. 2,4,5 and 6 singles positions.
Then, Jake Doulas put Washington up 2-0 after defeating senior Cedric Willems 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot. Sophomore Parker McGuiness cliched the Utes solo point of the day at No. 2 singles after cruising past Gal Hakak, 6-1, 6-4. Washington increased its lead to 3-1 when Emmet Egger edged freshman Freddie McGeehan at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-3. Jeff Hake then cliched the match for the Huskies following a three-set win over freshman Santiago Sierra, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
