SAN DIEGO - The 72nd-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (10-6) defeated Yale (10-5) by a score of 5-2 Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center. Freshman Santiago Sierra captured the match deciding point with a three-set thriller from the No. 5 singles position.

"This is a great team win," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "From start to finish we showed way better fight and attitude."

The Utes started off doubles play with a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 slot by senior Cedric Willems and junior Matt Cowley. The Bulldogs then answered with a win of their own at the No. 3 spot over Sierra and freshman Johan Jonhagen. But junior Jamey Swiggart and sophomore Parker McGuiness rallied for Utah at the No. 2 position and sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 win.

McGuiness quickly put Utah up 2-0 in singles play at the second spot, taking the first set 6-4 and going up 3-0 in the second before Martin Svenning retired. However, freshman Freddie McGeehan also retired from his match at the No. 3 slot, which gave Yale its first point.

Jonhagen then routed Alex Hagermoser at the sixth spot, 6-4, 6-3, while Sierra decided the match at 4-1 as he defeated Daniel Faierman, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at the No. 5 slot. The Bulldogs posted their second point when Cowley was narrowly defeated by Ziqi Wang at the No. 4 position, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Willems then bested Tyler Lu at the top spot, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Utes.

Utah opens Pac-12 Conference play at No. 41 Stanford on Friday, March 27.
