Bekerova Executes Upset in Utah's Loss to Houston

HOUSTON, Texas - The 48th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (1-5) dropped its match on the road as No. 56 Houston (5-4) came away with a 4-2 victory at Chancellors Racquet Club. No. 107 Tereza Bekerova headlined the Utes' effort as she executed an upset of No. 24 Despoina Vogasari at the first singles position (6-4, 6-4).
"This match was lost by a whole lot of inexperience, but the only way to gain experience is to go through it," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "However, I am proud of the effort and am so happy for Bekerova and her big win."
After weather caused a 90-minute delay and a change of venue, the match eventually kicked off at 11:30 a.m. CT and began with singles play.
The Cougars claimed an early lead as No. 90 Elena Kordolaimi overtook Sarah Richter at the second spot, 6-2, 6-3. Bekerova tallied the next victory to even the match score at 1-1.
Houston regained the edge with a win at No. 4, but Utah locked the match once again as Lexi Petrovic slipped past Mina Markovic at the fifth spot, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
The remaining two matches continued in fierce battle as both matches stretched to three sets. Tina Rupert ultimately came away with the No. 3 victory over Jena Cheng (3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3), as Maria Cardenas eventually took the No. 6 match from Margo Pletchter (7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5)) to clinch the win for the Cougars.
With the match decided 4-2, doubles matches were not played.
The Utes are back in action Thursday, Feb. 26 for their home opener against New Mexico. First Serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
