LUBBOCK, Texas - The 45th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (1-3) earned its first victory of the season over No. 55 Memphis (6-3), 4-2, on Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
"The first win is always the hardest to come by," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "We didn't play great, but we competed well. We will be better because of this."
After spitting the first two doubles matches, the doubles decision came down to the No. 2 match. Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Sarah Richter battled Liza Tymchenko and Kathryn Hughes to the final point, but ultimately dropped the match 7-6 to give the Tigers an early 1-0 edge.
The Utes quickly took control in singles play, taking going 4-1 to earn the victory. Richter topped Tymchenko (6-1, 2-6, 6-4) at the second position, as da Rosa took the fourth match from Hughes. Freshmen Margo Pletcher and Alexia Petrovic secured the victory for the Utes with wins at Nos. 5 and 6.
The Utes are back in action tomorrow against Texas Tech at 10 a.m. MT.
