SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team dropped a Pac-12 Conference match, falling in straight sets (17-25, 15-25, 22-25) to the No. 1-ranked USC Trojans in a matinee match at the Huntsman Center on Sunday.
The loss dropped Utah to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in league play, while the Trojans remained perfect, improving to 18-0 on the season and 6-0 in the Pac-12.
Utah opened the match with four consecutive points, but the Trojans would later use runs of 5-1 and 7-0 to take a 17-10 lead. The Utes countered with a 6-2 run and USC head coach Mick Haley was forced to call a timeout with the Trojans lead down to just three points, 19-16. USC gave up just one more point to the Utes following the timeout and went on to take the first set, 25-17.
The Utes were limited to just a .088 hitting effort in the second set, while the Trojans managed to hit at a clip of .382 and take a 25-15 win in the frame. USC led by as many as six points midway through the set until back-to-back kills from Brenna DeYoung and Carly Trueman pulled the Utes within four points, down 17-13. USC called a timeout and then went on an 8-2 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Trojans began the third set winning seven of the first nine points before the Utes came back with a 7-1 run and take a 9-8 lead following an attack error from USC. A 4-0 run would put USC on top 14-11, but the Utes countered with a 4-0 run of its own to take back the lead 15-14. The remainder of the set would go back-and-forth with both teams trading points, but USC's Samantha Bricio ended the set with a service ace to give the Trojans the set, 25-22, and the match 3-0.
Adora Anae led Utah with 16 kills and Jessie Jorgensen tallied a match-high 25 assists on the day. Jorgensen notched her fifth double-double of the season, as well, posting 10 digs for the Utes. Meanwhile, Caroline Sipiora led the Utes with 11 digs in the match.
Bricio led the Trojans with a match-high 17 kills and Taylor Whittingham posted a match-high 13 digs. Brittany Abercrombie collected a match-high five total blocks for the Trojans and USC finished the match out-blocking the Utes 10.0 to 3.0 in total team blacks.
Utah remains at home next weekend and will close out a four-match home stand hosting Stanford and California. The Utes and the Cardinal will meet up next Friday, Oct. 16, with a first serve set for 8 p.m.
