NAMPA, Idaho- The Utah women's track and field team wrapped up the Bronco Invitational Saturday with twelve top-five finishes and three event titles.
"There were a lot of really impressive performances today," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We had a lot of athletes run multiple events and they stayed tough and competed well all the way around. I really feel like this group is coming along nicely and everyone is truly buying in to what we are trying to do. We have some technical things to work on, but overall I am just really excited."
In the 600-meter run, the Utes earned five of the top six spots. The race came down to the wire as sophomore Grace Englund outlasted senior Ali Eisenbeiss, who is redshirting and competed unattached, to earn first place in a time of 1:33.31. Crossing the line third overall was junior Allison Aafedt in a time of 1:35.79. Rounding out the top five runners for Utah were Mesa Weidle in fifth (1:37.51) and Makenzie Clark in sixth (1:37.88).
The 1,000-meter race featured another Utah event title, as well as two others finishing in the top ten. True freshman Sarah Feeny led the way for the Utes, capturing first in her first collegiate race with a time of 2:50.24. Senior Andrea Chavez also competed for the Utes, finishing in 2:59.70 for eighth. Eisenbeiss also competed (unattached) and finished third overall in a time of 2:54.82.
The third Ute to claim an event title was redshirt senior Rebekah Winterton in the 3,000. Winterton finished in first place with a time of 9:52.33. Winterton was accompanied by fellow senior Nikki Rietz and freshman Shaylen Crook. Rietz finished seventh overall in a time of 10:09.99. Crook earned ninth overall (10:11.78).
"It's great to see (Rebekah) get her final season off to a great start," Kepler said. "She remained patient throughout the race and really kicked it into gear in the last 1,000 meters. She is looking like she is in similar form to what she was a year ago when she had an outstanding indoor and outdoor track season."
Rietz also represented the Utes in the 800, where she finished second overall in a time of 2:16.45.
In the 200, the Utes had three athletes finish in the top 15. Sophomore Alissa Atisme was the first Ute to finish, crossing the line in 25.44 seconds to claim fifth. Freshman Michelle Norman captured tenth in a time of 26.05 seconds and Raynee Helm placed 12th in 26.30
Atisme also competed in the 400, where she earned fourth in a time of 58.30 seconds. Sophomore Danielle Perez also competed for the Utes, finishing 11th.
In the mile, true freshman Dakota Grossman led the Utes with a fourth-place time of 5:09.22. Sophomore Jessica Sams finished right on Grossman's heels in a time of 5:11.37 to earn fifth.
In the long jump, Michelle Norman captured fifth with a jump measuring 5.44 meters.
The 4x400-meter relay featured Atisme, Weidle, Englund, and sophomore Christine Van Brocklin. The quartet fought back from an early bad exchange to finish second overall in a time of 3:53.16.
The Utes will split up next week to compete at the Mountain State Games and Washington Invitational.
