CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 42 University of Utah women's tennis team (0-1) dropped a close match to No. 5 Virginia (2-0) at the Boar's Head Sports Club, falling 3-4 to the Cavaliers.
The Utes took an edge before the match began as the Cavaliers were forced to forfeit No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to illness on the team. Virginia knotted doubles play with a 6-3 win at the second spot as Stephanie Nauta and Maci Epstien topped Sarah Richter and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa. Tereza Bekerova and Margo Pletcher secured the doubles point for the Utes, defeating Skylar Morton and Cassie Mercer out of the first spot, 7-5.
Taking another point due to the No. 6 singles forfeit, Utah entered singles play leading 2-0. Freshman Alexia Petrovic added to the Utes lead with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Taylor Wingo at the fifth position to put the visiting team up 3-0.
Virginia retaliated, as No. 16 Nauta defeated No. 100 Bekerova at the top singles spot (6-2, 6-4) and Cassie Mercer topped Gerstner da Rosa at No. 4 (6-3, 6-2).
The Cavaliers continued their winning streak, taking the No. 2 match as Moreton downed Richter, 6-3, 6-3.
With the two teams knotted at 3-3, the decision came down to the battle between Epstien and Jena Cheng. The match was close, but Epstiein squeezed out the both the individual victory and locked a Virginia win as she took the match 7-6(7-5), 7-6(8-6).
"We were up 3-0 on the number five team in the country and had opportunities to achieve the best win in program history," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "I am proud of the effort and we will grow from this."
Utah continues its' road trip, stopping next in Ann Arbor, Mich. for the ITA kickoff weekend Saturday and Sunday.
