CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The No. 44 University of Utah women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Miami Spring Invitational at the Neil Schiff Center today. Facing five top-10 singles players and two top-15 teams, the Utes managed just one victory.
"We got beat by one of the best teams in the country on their home court," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "We learned a valuable lesson that will pay off later in the year when it counts the most. "
Utah opened play with singles matches against No. 12 Miami and doubles competition against duos from Miami and No. 11 Vanderbilt.
The Utes struggled against the Hurricanes as Miami took eight of nine matches. No. 100 Tereza Bekerova was pitted against seventh-ranked Stephanie Wagner. Bekerova started off strong, leading 4-3 in the first set before Wagner came back for a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Sarah Richter also faced tough competition, falling to No. 94 Line Lileikite, 6-2. 6-2. No. 39 Sinead Lohan continued the Hurricane winning streak as she defeated Jena Cheng 6-1, 6-1.
Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa fell to No. 88 Clementina Riobueno, 6-2, 6-3, while No. 58 Wendy Zhang, 6-3, 6-2, downed Alexia Petrovic.
Seniors Lucia Kovaricikova and Elena Najera-Salas both fell to their respective opponents, as freshman Margo Pletcher suffered the same fate.
Freshman Victoria Robertson was responsible for the Utes sole victory of the day with a win over Judith Bohnenkamp. After dropping the first set 4-6, Pletcher came back with a 6-1 win in the second set and grabbed a 10-8 third-set to take the match.
The Utes faired no better in doubles play, dropping three matches to Vanderbilt and one to Miami.
Robertson and Petrovic took a 6-2 loss against Silvia Fuentes and Yolimar Ogando, Bekerova and Pletcher fell to Frances Altick and Astra Sharma (6-3) and Najera-Salas and Cheng dropped their match to Georgina Sellyn and Sydney Campbell (6-3).
Da Rosa and Richter, the Utes only returning doubles duo from last season, also took a 6-2 loss against Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares.
The Utes continue competition tomorrow at 7 a.m. MT with doubles matches against No. 22 Texas and Singles play versus No. 11 Vanderbilt.
