"We are excited to host our only home meet of the year," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "There will be plenty of giveaways, as well as free admission and free parking. We want as many fans as we can and I look forward to another successful meet."
Competing for the Utes will be six returning athletes and three freshmen. Senior Nicole Rietz will headline this group after a strong performance last week at the Nature's Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic.Another athlete to look for Friday is true freshman Shaylen Crook, who looked more like a veteran than a freshman as she captured sixth in her collegiate debut. Competing for the first time in front of a home crowd, Crook looks to continue her success and show fans what she can do.
Last season, the Utes finished third at the Utah Open and were led by the strong fourth-place performance of junior Susannah Hurst.In her season debut, Hurst led the way with a fourth-place performance. Hurst was in the lead pack throughout the entire race, but was unable to make the pass of the top-three runners down the final stretch. She clocked a time of 14:34.9.
Crossing the line second for the Utes and 15th overall was Becky Sarmiento in a time of 15:12.5 She was followed by Nikki Rietz (15:17.9) and Andrea Chavez (15:28.4) in 16th and 17th. Rounding out the top five was Lauren Mills in 18th with a time of 15:29.4.
